Red Bull Salzburg vs Celtic-Preview

  • Despite losing 6-5 (Agg.) in the semi-finals of the Europa League 2017/18, Red Bull Salzburg are 13th favourites this edition, and currently ranked 34th by UEFA. Seven points clear at the top of the Austrian Bundesliga. The ‘Red Bulls’ have just two losses from their previous 26 features in this competition (W14, D10, L2) and haven’t lost an EL game at home since Nice beat them 1-0 in 2016!
  • Furthermore, with 43 European (EL/CL) goals scored and 17 conceded since that defeat 25 matches ago, Salzburg have scored six more goals than Celtic in that time, whilst conceding 16 less!
  • As Salzberg continue to improve in both domestic and Europe competition. One-time Champions League (as the European Cup) winners Celtic appear to be capitulating. A fifth-place berth domestically (W4, D1, L2) is doing little to quell rumours of a rift at Celtic Park. Forty-seventh in the UEFA rankings. The Scottish champions have won just 20% of their ten games against Austrian competition in Europe (W2, D3, L5).
  • With a 45% European win record from 357 games to make matters worse for Brendan Rogers’ ‘Bhoys’, they have won just two of eight away games domestically and haven’t won an away tie in Europe since 2011. But still hold a 41% win record from 104 Europa League/UEFA cup matches (W43, D26, L35).
  • Players to watch:

Salzburg’s leading goalscorer, Munas Dabbur has nine goals in all competitions – in 45 European           games, Dabbur has 14 goals.

  • Meanwhile, one-goal Scott Sinclair has seven European goals from 28 career appearances, which may curry favour with Brendan Rogers as he deals with injuries.
  • Stat attack:

Salzburg are currently riding a 16-game unbeaten streak (W14, D2).

  • Three of both teams last six European fixtures have seen both teams scoring.
  • Four of Salzberg’s and two of Celtic’s last six European games have seen goals in both halves.
